A common problem but one which is difficult to deal with

Cerys McNamara, a volunteer for Mind Jersey’s Youthful Minds, a participation group for those aged 11 to 25, outlines some advice and mechanisms for coping with anxiety.

PROBLEMS with anxiety are common for young people but this doesn’t make them any less difficult to deal with.

There are many stressors which young people face that can cause anxiety such as academic pressures, social problems, family problems and world events. Feeling anxiety in response to any of these stressful events is completely valid.

Feelings of anxiety are normal but can become a problem when they stop someone from being able to do things and enjoy their life. It can be an extremely unpleasant feeling which makes you feel as though you are in great danger or that something bad is going to happen, even if that isn’t the case.

Ways in which anxiety may present in a person can be physical symptoms such as sweating, heart palpitations and feeling sick.
It can also make a person appear shy, irritable and withdrawn when that may not actually be their personality. Some people are good at masking their anxiety and may appear confident on the outside.
