On 1 May Sam Wood will embark on a 6,500-mile trek from France to North China, which will take approximately 18 months to complete, in aid of Mind Jersey. His journey will take him across Europe, the Middle East and Asia as he looks to raise awareness of mental health and to raise £20,000 for his chosen charity.
The local Costa Coffe employee is embarking on the challenge after going through his own struggles with mental health. Sam understands how important it is to have someone to talk to which is why he’s chosen Mind Jersey as the beneficiary of his fundraising adventure.
Sam said: “I’ve always been under the impression that if you want to see any growth in life, be it physical, mental or spiritual, you will almost definitely find it when you push yourself out of your comfort zone. Mind Jersey is a great local charity that offers advice and support to anyone struggling with mental health. It also campaigns to reduce stigma and increase understanding around mental health and mental illness, which is something that I think is severely lacking in Jersey and in the UK.
I share Mind’s vision of a society that promotes good mental health for everyone and treats people that suffer from mental illness fairly, positively and with respect. The mind is an incredible thing and I think that when you feed it with the right kind of message, it will carry you to places long after your body has given up.”
We are delighted Sam has chosen to support Mind Jersey on his epic journey. James Le Feuvre, Executive Directive for Mind Jersey, said: “It’s so positive to see young people opening up about their mental health struggles. We hope that by islanders sharing their stories, like Sam, it will encourage others to do the same and seek help if they need it.”
At Mind Jersey, we can provide you with information and peer support on a wide range of mental health conditions and how to deal with them. We support the carers, friends and families of those who are ill to help them understand their loved one’s illness and how best to support them. We can also partner with or signpost you to other local health professionals and national support services which might be suited to your needs. We believe mental health is everyone’s business. Whether you are an individual wishing to increase your knowledge on mental health or an organisation looking for training for your staff, there will be a course for you.
