Women’s Mental health through the ages - why it’s important – changing views changing lives.
Description
It’s important to review and speak about changes in how women’s mental health has been viewed because it helps us understand the roots of stigma, recognise progress, and identify ongoing challenges that still need addressing. By looking at history, we see how cultural biases shaped treatment, and by speaking about it today, we ensure women’s voices and needs are not overlooked.
Current challenges in women’s mental health include unrealistic societal pressures, unequal access to care, and the double burden of balancing work, family, and personal wellbeing. These issues make it harder for women to maintain mental health despite progress in awareness and treatment.
In the UK, women reported 10%higher life satisfaction, 11% higher scores for feeling worthwhile and 7% higher happiness than in Jersey, compared with smaller differences among men (6%, 4% and 1% respectively) (ref. JEP 11.12.2025).
